Hello! This time I'm writing a full review of the Eee PC 90
1. To begin here are the specs:
-Intel Atom
-20GB SSD (a 4GB drive and a 16GB drive)
-WiFi b/g/n
-Pearl White
-1GB DDR2
-Intel GMA950
1.Performance
The specs aren't really impressing, but I must admit that this is a quite fast machine. It can easily run GTA San Andreas, without any lag. The trick is to put the OS on the smaller, but faster SSD. Programs open almost immediately and without any lag. So the overall performance is quite nice. I have tried it both with Linux and Windows and I should admit that this Eee is kinda slow with Linux and also you don't get that exceptional battery life. I don't know, it might be me, since I have been working only with relatively fast machines, so for some people it might be fine. While with XP I get a really fast performance and about 4 hours of battery life on Super Performance and from 6-8 hours on Power Saving Mode, 6 with
wireless on and 7-8 hours with Wireless off. But I'll talk about that later. So overall it's very fast machine.
2.Screen and graphics
As you may or may not know the Eee PC 901 comes with a 8.9" screen with resolution of 1024x600. Not the most impressive resolution which I have ever seen, but it's nice. The graphics card is also good. You can play games like GTA SA, WoW, CS etc. without any lag. Sometimes I have to use software like GMABooster to get bet
ter performance, but I use it rarely.
3.Touchpad and keyboard
So good performance, good graphics what else you need? Well, you need a good to use touchpad and keyboard. I'll start with the touchpad. Well, I'm pretty sure the touchpad is the same as with the Eee PC 900, but I'll review some of the features. So again you have the gestures like twofinger scrolling, two-finger zooming, three-finger swipe for Internet back and forward, three finger tapping and so on. The mouse buttons are again quite heavy to press, but they're usable. Keyboard. Well, nothing has changed since the 701. Same old keyboard. Again we have the same old tiny buttons, which at first try are unusable, but with some use you'll feel it like a normal keyboard. And I must tell you that after so much typing on my Eee, now I have a hard time typing on a regular keyboard. Same with the screen.
4.Features
1)Super Hybrid Engine
Now the Eee PC 901 comes with an Intel Atom processor, which supports this feature. It's basically a bunch of Perormance Modes, and you switch through them with the press of a button. The modes are: Super Performance, High Performance, Power Saving and Auto(Auto high-performance or Auto power-saving). Each mode clocks the CPU at a different speed. Super Performance runs on 840 Mhz and when needed goes to1.68 Ghz. On High Performance it runs with a speed of 800Mhz and goes to 1.2GHZ when needed. And on Power Savin
g mode it runs at 6ooMhz and doesn't go to anything more even if you need it. But the good news is that you can easily go to High or Super Performance, when you need the power.
2)Microphone and webcam
So the cam is the same as the old 900, again 1.3 MEGApixels.
The difference is with the microphone. This time there are 2 stereo mics. Great for video calling and Skype.
3)Wireless
Ok. So, the wireless card is also nice. In my opinion a little bit better than on the 900.
I catch up to 71 AP's right from my desk and when I'm on the balcony even more. Of course I live in a nice neigbourhood and
I also have a router at home, so I don't care how much I catch. Again the card features wireless-n, which is great.
By the way I'm not really sure how fast the N is, cause my routeris Wireless G, so I can't test it.
5.Battery life
Ah, yes! This one might be very important for some of you, so I'll as much details, as I can.The 901 comes with a 6-cell battery and ASUS says that it lasts up to 8 hours. When I bought this
I didn't believe on this and I was right. But only when I had the original Xandros Linux. After I installed
XP, it became true. I wanna say that on minimal brightness, WiFi turned off, and on Power Savingit said 10 HOURS!! Well, of course I wasn't doing anything,
other than just staring at my nifty background. On Super Performance, Wireless on, Brightness up it lasts about 4 hours, which is also impressing.
Of course if you turn off Wireless, I'll get more. I mean with Wireless turned on, you almost immediatelygain like an hour of battery life. On High Performance again Wireless on, well, it gives me a good 5 hours.
And on Power Saving it's the most. And again it depends. If you have Wireless on you are getting less,
but I won't waste your time with unneeded facts. What means Auto Power-saving mode? This is
again power saving, it runs on 600Mhz, but when you need the power it goes more, unlike just Power Saving.I believe that's all I can tell you for the battery.
6.Conclusion
Overall, this is a really good computer for all needs. For like a month, this is my primary computer
and I have no trouble with this. It runs good, plays video good and for me it's doing the job. So if you
need a really small and powerful machine for all needs, this is the one for you!
